In Germany, the term compliance became known and popular as a result of the major corruption proceedings against Siemens in 2006. It is used by legislators and courts without there being a binding definition.

As a result, the obligations for companies are becoming ever more sprawling and confusing, but at the same time ever more expensive to implement.
